NAVESINK GARDEN CLUB WINS TWO AWARDS

The Garden Club of New Jersey awarded the Navesink Garden Club the Hanover Garden Club Trophy and the GCNJ Special Award to a medium club for a continuing project in civic beautification on June 8, 2017 in Bridgewater, NJ.

The Hanover Garden Club trophy was for staging the Art in Bloom Flower Design Show in the Monmouth Museum on June 24 to 26 in 2016.  The Museum was mounting a show of paintings by local Red Bank artist Lewis Lanza Rudolph. Ten (10) Navesink Garden Club members each assembled a flower design interpreting ten (10) specific paintings.  Additionally, each member wrote a paragraph on how the painting inspired her design.

The Special Award to a Medium Club was for a continuing project in civic beautification for maintenance of Red Bank’s Downtown street planters. Since 1996 the Navesink GC, in cooperation with Red Bank’s downtown business alliance, River Center, sends out a team of four members once a week beginning in June though the end of October to canvas the downtown streets for about 50 flower pots strategically placed to show off Red Bank in its best light.

The teams rotated each planter with a quarter turn to the right in order to promote all-around, even growth. They deadheaded spent blossoms, trimmed back ambitious growers and pruned to maintain a pleasing shape. Not insignificantly, they removed bottles, cans, cigars, cigarette butts and paper left behind by unconcerned citizens.  Where plants had been damaged or appeared suffering from underwatering, the team reported these to River Center for remediation. Each team spent about 2 hours per session—eight person hours per week.  While the original planting is contracted to a local nursery and the watering is done my borough workers, the contribution of the Navesink Gardeners is essential to the success of the project. River Center personnel say they would not consider placing the planters around town without the ability to monitor and maintain them.  Twenty-seven members of the Club participate in this project, amounting to 152 person-hours per season.
