NAVESINK GARDEN CLUB CELEBRATES 70th ANNIVERSARY

On December 18, the Navesink Garden Club celebrated 70 years of providing education, resources, and opportunities for members and others to expand their love of gardening and floral design through gardening programs, community beautification projects, horticulture and design programs for seniors, an annual flower show, and an annual scholarship award. A 70th Anniversary Tea was held at the home of President, Marina Kerber, in Elberon, NJ. Since 1947, members have been active in civic, environmental, and historic preservation projects to protect the past and beautify the present and future. Their sterling silver tea set, which the Club uses for special occasions, was used for this celebration.

As Luther Burbank said, “Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful: they are sunshine, food, and medicine for the soul.” The theme of the Club, “Growing in the Garden,” is to nurture the earth, nurture others, and nurture ourselves.

Since September, the Club has garnered several awards. On September 13, it held a small standard flower show, called “Going Platinum,” with 12 design entries and 89 horticultural entries, receiving 32 blue ribbons from the four National Garden Club (NGC) judges. On November 14, the “Tiger Patch” garden (created and run as a Junior Garden Club of the NGC) were first place, Blue Ribbon winners of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) Gardening & Greening Contest. Ongoing projects include

Five months later, their membership grew to 50,  and in the following 70 years, the Club has moved to several locations, increased and decreased in membership, and has evolved into 44 members who still meet, volunteer, and work together to better the  area. Since 2010, the monthly meetings have been held at The Atrium in Red Bank,
