“Tiger Patch” Garden Receives Blue Ribbon

Award received at a reception in November, from PHS

Two members of the Navesink Garden Club, Laurie Brekke and Hope Hanlon, were recently awarded a Blue Ribbon in the 2016 Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) Gardening and Greening Contest for their creation of a children’s learning garden at Atlantic Highlands Elementary School. They were selected from over 300 entries and recognized for their commitment to enhance their neighborhood through their work in this garden.

The garden is called Tiger Patch. It got its name from a school-wide contest held by the student council about four years ago. It consists of 13 raised beds of various heights. The project includes planting seeds, watering the plants, and weeding. They planted flowers and vegetables and even tasted the vegetables in the classrooms.
